Changes in Mountain Snow, Ice and Water around the World – Local implications and Global Prospects with John Pomeroy

Dr. Pomeroy, among many other distinctions, is the Canada Research Chair in Water Resources and Climate Change and UNESCO Chair in Mountain Water Sustainability.

Mountain snow and ice are in retreat around the world as temperatures warm due to climate heating.  This is resulting in thinning and retreat of mountain glaciers, reduced snow coverage and shorter snow seasons and changes in the timing and volume of streamflow generated from “mountain water towers”.  We are not immune to this in the Canadian Rockies where glacier retreat and thinning has reached record levels since 2021 and “snow droughts” have resulted in record low streamflows and soil moisture in the Bow River Basin and contributed to the risk of wildfires.  A future, deglaciated and warmer, Bow River Basin will have earlier peak streamflows flows and much lower summer flows as well as greater variability in streamflows.  The implications of this for achieving water sustainability will be discussed.
