Because we, and the rest of the world wasted decades talking ourselves out of action in time on the global climate threat, Canada now appears on track to warm by at least 30 C before the end of this century. This presentation makes the case for climate understanding based on what we actually know rather than what we simply want to be true. This presentation is about what we think we know is true and happening now and what is wishful thinking about climate change as it will impact where and how we live in Canada. It aims to help propel our society beyond the current infantile rescue fantasies that inform current climate policies so, by way of building strong communities, we and our children can have legitimate, honest hope for the future.

Bob Sandford is Senior Government Affairs Liaison, Global Climate Emergency Response at the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health. In this capacity Bob was the co-author of the UN Water in the World We Want report on post-2015 global sustainable development goals relating to water. He is also lead author of Canada in the Global World, a United Nations expert report examining the capacity of Canada’s water sector to meet and help others meet the United Nations 2030 Transforming Our World water-related Sustainable Development Goals. Bob is also the author, co-author or editor of more than thirty-five books, one of which, Our Vanishing Glaciers: The Snows of Yesteryear and the Future Climate of the Mountain West, won a national prize for the best science writing in Canada.

Bob Sandford is also National Co-chair for the upcoming United Nations International Year of Glacier’s Preservation in 2025.
